Welcome to TWHST!

Thirsk White Horse Swim Team (TWHST) has a reputation for developing swimmers in a very friendly and supportive environment. The Club's objective, apart from promoting the sport of swimming, is to help to maximise the potential of every individual. This is achieved through the dedication and expertise of our coaching teams, the help of our supporters and the work of the Committee. TWHST is a competitive club. This means that members are expected to be committed to develop themselves, both in terms of training and attitude.

Thirsk White Horse Swim Team

The Club is based at Thirsk Swimming Pool for all its training, galas and competitions. Our Club notices are displayed in the cabinet inside the main door and also on boards that are erected at training sessions and galas. Information including PBs, Galas and forthcoming events is available both on the noticeboards and on this website. We are affiliated to the Yorkshire Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). The Club has over 200 members ranging from 4 years old through to Masters (19 years and above).

Benefits of Membership Details Entry Contact

The prime reason for joining is to further develop your water skills. This is a good enough reason on its own! However the benefits to members go far beyond this. Learning how to compete, to win and to lose are lessons for life. As is the development of the mental approach needed for disciplined, structured and at times tough training cycles. This requires commitment, which is an important element in training and in competition. The ability to schedule all these activities with school and social life is a good preparation for management of time in the future. Meeting people from other localities who share common interests and goals both enhances confidence and social skills. Don't be surprised if new friendships develop. The nature of the physical activity involved provides a focus in life that might be missing or which could be found in less productive areas. You will also become more interested in having a healthy diet. Striving to improve performances becomes part of family life. It may sound odd but it's true. The whole family usually turns out to be interested and supportive of what becomes a common goal. For parents, you will meet others who have children involved in the Club and you too will make friends who have common interests. All in all, the social benefits of joining the Club are probably as great as the swimming!

The Executive Committee

This committee runs the Club in a way that follows the Club Constitution. The committee consists of a volunteer group of parents and supporters, elected each year at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The committee's duties are very wide ranging. Finances, membership, pool hire, arranging competitions, discipline, social activities, coaching matters and matters involving the ASA are just a few. As a new member you will almost certainly be first in contact with our Membership Secretary or Club Secretary, however over a period of time you will meet all Committee members. If you have any ideas or proposals for improving the Club in any way, please contact any Committee member. A list of the current Committee members is displayed in the glass notice board just inside the Club. The Club is run under a Constitution that is determined by an annual AGM. The Club's constitution is displayed in the cabinet inside the front door of Thirsk Pool.

Costs

TWHST is run and administered through the efforts of a small number of volunteers. We're always looking for new volunteers to help - click here for further details!

The cost of pool hire, coaching staff, administration, coaches to club galas, cups and medals are met from the income of the Club this is largely derived from the Annual Fee and payment for swimming sessions. The latter being paid monthly in advance except for the older swimmers who pay on a ‘Pay as you go’ system. The rates are calculated on a 44-week basis to allow for holidays and pool closure.

The cost of membership is dependent on the number of swimmers in the family and any changes deemed necessary are made at the AGM. More information about session timings and costs can be found on the Club Details page.
